    Just had a rest on the couch after work and spontaneously started thinking about overherhead cranes in Space Engineers. I used to be an operator of one of those in a former job I had and it's quite a versatile and useful tool if you would have one in, say, a hangar for smaller ships or a storage for crates.

    Couple of pics;

    Instead of the hook there could be, for example, a magnet for picking up ships and metal crates.

    I have not really thought of any schematics for building an overhead crane with the tools we already have at our disposal in the game, but I'm guessing most of the things we need is already in there. We would probably only need a relatively easy way to build the trolley and the wire rope that connects the hook/magnet with the trolley.

    Just thought it was a fun idea so I posted it. What do you guys think? =)

    wheels and gravity generators
    lots of wheels and some gravity generators
    in fact, make most of the thing out of wheels

    That's awesome PeterHammerman. Now there just need to be some engines for the wheels in the game instead of the thrusters up top and it would be next to perfect. =)

    I question why you have gyros on that crane actually. Seems a bit redundant. Is there a particular reason I'm overlooking?

    Yes I don't think that there is a need for gyros on cranes either.

    Also, about having engines on the wheels, by using rotors, you can set the power level of them and make them rotate themselves. The only thing is there is currently no way to sync a group of motors or have them work off the WASD keys. I think it would be really good to have that in the future.

    Here is a link to my Multi-Axis Crane/Hanger Concept. It essentially proves a multi axis crane such as an overhead crane which doesn't just move forwards and backwards is possible in SE. I will be making a larger version with a Z axis (up and down) in the future. Check it out! I think it is the closest thing to a real overhead crane in SE. I will be uploading my final version to the Steam Workshop in the next few hours and will post a thread in the Community Creations when I do. Can't wait to see what others can do with it and to see it inside an actual ship.

    Awesome design on the crane but i feel it needs some wires or something that doesnt take up a huge amount of space for smaller designs, a wire drum + rotor would work and rotors that respound to key inputs such as thrusters do to get rid of thrusters would be amazing upgrades to this design with out requiring an entire, non customizeable structure to be put into the game.

    Theyre not necessary. Added only to make smooth moves for video (slowing speed as inertia dampeners , and i didnt use AI mass).
    When console and programming would work and merged power connection by rotors, there can program moves to wsad & qe by enabling(turning on) pre-defined rottors.
