You would also be able to fit into the profession that you like, having advantages in that area, while having to strengthen your weaknesses with your other teammate's strengths
  2. Mcsticken Apprentice Engineer

Fit into the profession that you we like? Well...
I never wanted to do this job in the first place!
    I... I wanted to be...
    (piano vamp)
Leaping from tree to tree! As they float through empty space near British Space Columbia! With my best girl by my side!
    The Larch!
    The Pine!
    The Giant Redwood tree!
    The Sequoia!
    The Little Whopping Rule Tree!
    We'd sing! Sing! Sing!
Oh, I'm a space lumberjack, and I'm okay,
I sleep all night and I work all day.
CHORUS: He's a space lumberjack, and he's okay,
He sleeps all night and he works all day.
I cut down trees, I eat my lunch,
    I go to the lava-try.
    On Wednesdays I go shoppin'
And have buttered scones for tea.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch,
    He goes to the lava-try.
    On Wednesdays 'e goes shoppin'
And has buttered scones for tea.
I cut down trees, I skip and jump,
I like to press wild flowers.
    I put on women's clothing,
    And hang around in bars.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps,
He likes to press wild flowers.
    He puts on women's clothing
    And hangs around.... In bars???????
I chop down trees, I wear high heels,
    Suspenders and a bra.
    I wish I'd been a girlie
    Just like my dear papa.
Mounties: He cuts down trees, he wears high heels
    Suspenders?? and a .... a Bra????
(spoken, raggedly) What's this? Wants to be a "girlie"? Oh, My!
And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!
All: He's a space lumberjack, and he's okaaaaaaayyy..... (BONG)!

I don't need it, but let's educate the johnnie-come-late whippersnappers, they should all be introduced to the classics and be taught the meaning of life!

  5. Mcsticken Apprentice Engineer

I haven't seen that in a while, thanks.

Also, it took four posts to go from talking about spacesuits to posting a video from The Meaning of Life. My job here is done.
  6. Vortexthewise Apprentice Engineer

well that one took an interesting turn...

but while we are on the subject, this next one is completely relevant to this discussion....completely relevant I assure you.... :sneaky:

  7. Leonhardt Senior Engineer

Thread devolves into shitposting: Down the bottle
  8. Maegil Senior Engineer

    I protest! Monty Python isn't shitposting, it's cultrue! CUL-TRUE!
  9. Mcsticken Apprentice Engineer

Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elder berries.

Also, if the thread devolves into shitposting, but then goes back, do you have to throw up what you drank? Because I think if there is upgrades instead of different suits, they should have an active ability slot. Basically, a single use health pack, or single use battery for recharging the suit, a zoom feature, magnetic (or something like Gecko tape) boots, stuff like that. Maybe we could get a bottle of whiskey in case we need to go the forums.
  10. Leonhardt Senior Engineer

Actually you drink a glass of milk

  12. Mcsticken Apprentice Engineer

And back to rerailing (why does that not count as a word?).

What about communication upgrade or a suit that had something like that? It would give an increased broadcast range for remote controlling ships and such, and would let you (assuming this were to be implemented, and wouldn't conflict with this idea) fly ships remotely without being in a different ship.
  13. Skeloton Master Engineer

Lol a close family friend who died from cancer a few months ago had this play during his funeral. I managed to get a large group of those attending to whistle lol.

  15. Mcsticken Apprentice Engineer

Forgot about that, but the other half of it still stands, provided they add that sort of thing to the game.

Hooray for search, I almost spent 30 minutes typing up almost the exact same suggestion.
    Bumping for greatness
One additional suggestion now that we have Oxygen, is charging suits. Suits could have a set charge (like the scout suit would last longest, maybe have an hour or two with charge) -This would mean you'd need to go into an oxygen environment to switch/recharge your suit battery. If your charge ran out while you were in space, movement and tool speed could take a massive hit (down to 10% efficiency) or even be deadly. If you died in an expensive suit, tough luck! yay for more meaningful deaths!
Quick Edit: Flight suits could be rechargeable in cockpits (as it is now) and perhaps come with additional hud features.

Just wanted to chime in and say...

Makes sense for engineers to have bespoke suits, and could really add some CHARACTER to otherwise generic engineer appearances and functionality. Especially for the timeline Space Engineers is at, we already pretty much have military exo-suit prototypes right now, and its already rooted deep into the current media with films and games already.

I'd suggest a simple class based system personally, and borrowing above from some excellent suggestions already.

1.LOWSIG - Low Signature hard to detect low inv capacity and charge. Slimmer. Faster. Weaker.
2.ALLPURPOSE - Standard suit in current implementation.
    3. WELDER - Double WorkSpeed Heavy Exosuit. 2x size of current player. Larger, unable to move thru doors but can still pass through single large blocks.
    4. GRINDER
    5. LOADER - Has improved thrusters. Can "grab" blocks and physically manipulate them. Slowly.

While it may be a fair chunk of work to model and code the suits, I'd say it'd be worth it.

-Entirely conceivable in Space Engineers timeline.
-Gamers are already familiar with the concept of 'classes' from other games.
-Exo-Suits are just cool. End of.
-Could provide a lot of variety and utility.
-A further element of character customisation.

Obviously the artistic stylisation of Space Engineers is mostly in the hands of players, ship design.
Exo variations could bring something with regards to a VISUAL IDENTITY to this game, which is something I feel is lacking currently.

Line 5 engis up in the current build and take a screenie.
Now imagine same screeny with each of the 5 engi's described above.

Now if the two were on a shelf in a games store side by side as box art, which would you reach for first?

Gets into Airlock. Goes to MedBay. Discovers the brand new Exo Overlay Welder Suit. Takes off standard suit. Proudly gets into the new Exo Overlay Welder Suit. Tries to exit Airlock. Fails miserably.:D
  19. RageMasterUK Apprentice Engineer

    Exactly :D :D :D

Ship re-designs would be in order to take advantage of the 3, 4 and 5 Heavy Exo. Peeps struggling to fill some of their larger creations on the workshop with meaningful rooms...
You'd be encouraged to make a "Heavy Exo" room I guess, with blast doors and stuff. Maybe even a specialist suit change block, Heavy Exo only with no respawning. Pipe into it and it will "AUTOSTOCK" your stored HeavyWelderExos and drain your grinders so when you change you already have the ability to lay down parts and build.

The Heavys could have mag-boots to lock onto and walk upon ships without gravity maybe... a larger inventory size, some sort of inventory quickdump/quickload feature for ease of use, cut down on the inventory micromanaging somewhat, somehow.

And obviously... no piloting ships or sitting in cockpits in HEAVY o_0

I'd also throw an idea now thanks to O2 for a "survival suit" designed for escape pods, carriers much more oxygen and energy so you'll survive longer to be rescued, trade off can be substantially smaller weight limits, you could carry, say one tool at a time and a few parts, to manufacture beacons or whatnot when you make planetfall or need to repair your pod.

Or if you're just drifting in space you have enough energy to wait for rescue.

This forum is busy so I am not going to read it all sorry guys
but the base idea YES we should have other suits / Suit attachments that would aid us for a cost of course
  22. ObjectZero Apprentice Engineer

I'm all for custom suits. While I like the suit we have I think we need to be able to make changes to it besides just the color.

With now being able to take the helmet off I think it should be needed to remove the helmet to upgrade or changes a suit, or at least be in a space that a suit can be taken off in.

I'd like it to be handle in a grid or slot fashion. Each suit has a set number of slots. Upgrades can be applied to the slots. Each upgrade has an effect on a key function. That way you can't build the super suit that does all better then every other. Giving reason to change the suit to what you need to do.

Like an upgrade to improve welding speed. But that's all it effects. Maybe as well we could later down the line make suits with more slots. But I would go to far with that, I'd still like it to be in reach of new players and not something that have to run around the stars for. Since most of us are more keen on building our ships not building suits.

Also I'd put in a fast helmet upgrade, for the people that worry too much or miss up with the grinder or drill a little too often. Oxygen leaks out of a room helmet goes on be for a player dies.

I'd also like to see more cosmetic options for the suit. Like different helmets, backpacks, boots and gloves. Make it a little easier to tell who is who and make the suit feel a little more personal.

If you have suits for mining, building, fighting, scouting - why would you bother creating a ship anymore? The all-around but nothing special suit is perfectly fine. The SHIPS are the things that can do special things...
  24. RageMasterUK Apprentice Engineer

Ships would still have a massive role.
What would you bother creating a ship?
Well... these are the special things you requested, non exhaustive off the top of my head...

    -Ore refining
-Assembly (need to build the suits?)
-High Volume Storage and Transport of mats, comps and other ships.
    -High Speed Longer Range Travel
    -Respawn point
-Vastly increased grind/weld/drill work rate (exponentially more tooling for bigger jobs)
    -Remote Control
    -Suit recharge point
    -Assault Platform
    -Comms Platform
    -Power Generation/Collection/Storage
    -Atmospheric Re-entry (ponentially)
-Entering orbit, reaching escape velocity (potentially)
-An area to grown and eat food (potentially)

I have a thread in my sig that would go perfect for this, maybe some custom tools require certain suits because of either size, auto reload capabilities instead of the infiniclips we have now in guns, rocket launcher requires armoured suit to protect from backblast. Maybe having a special set of airlock blocks or tool rack instead of the magical cargo containers, cause who stores explosives in a big pile in a box?

Several interesting suggestions by the OP. I don't know about specific command suits, but I am all for suits set up for specific tasks. Particularly FoF capabilities. A modular system for suits would make the most sense, but seems most challenging to implement. Task build suits would be a good way to go.
I also think that hacking needs a complete overhaul, or dual methods of hacking. An electronic tool that gives temporary control of doors, and limited control over other devices. The current method of hacking would be needed for permanent control.
