Last night, tried my hand at trying to capture some of those Cargo Ships. Made a large ship with a flip down mechanism with large grinders on it. Along with a couple landing gears on the front. Had some success and some problems. Mostly just pilot problems!

Would like to see designs of some fellow engineer's capture ships.

    Thanks!

I'm in the process of making it look more streamlined and painting it. I added heavy armor to the middle piping part so now my weight doubled so I'll probably double the thrusters.

It's designed to grab, slow, then suck out the internal juices of whatever ship it gets a hold of.

I got one i call Backstop. But ive gotten the idea of repurposing a mining carriage for a similar idea. I'll post images when ive built it.

    Ok here it is

Thats pretty nice! Never thought about putting the landing gear and grinders on like that. I like the way you presented and showed your thought process of building the ship in your images.

    Great work.

At the moment I just fly over in a small craft tug, clamp on the side get out disable any booby traps then fly both back home using the large ships engines. When I get back I have a small grinder setup on my asteroid base. I use the same small tug, clamp onto a side panel or a hanger door of the main ship, then using the hand grinder cut that big free, and use the tug to fly that section over to the large grinders.

It's a slow process, and tricky flying a small ship tug dragging and pushing around large ship sections. Still it looks cool with all the ships outside my base with sections cut away a bit at a time. It feels like a low budget one man salvage operation at the moment. When I've salvaged enough I think I will progress to a large ship with it's own grinders.

This is what I currently use to capture ships. It is a heavily modified military escort with 3 gatling turrets and 2 forward-facing rocket pods. A red light is also attached for extra space pirate-ness.

Thinking about doing this as well, as all of my test craft in creative have not been working. Does hitting P still engage the landing gear for you? I don't know If I found a bug or what, but every time I go and try to grab a ship with landing gears, I have to go to the control panel and turn them on. I just can't hit P anymore to engage the landing gear, I can disengage the landing gear with P.

    Anybody else experiencing this?

I had this idea to make a big ship shaped like a shark with grinders for teeth. The lower jaw would be on a rotor and it'd fly up behind the ship and literally chomp it up.

Instead I made a pit and I bring ships back and feed them into it.

Well that made up my mind. Going to have to make a platform with grinders. Going to think of the song every time I use it too. That was awesome!

Some nice tips in this thread. Had never thought of clamps to grab the victim for grinding either to be honest beyond the typical clamp and damp piracy. I use a modded spawn file so have some fairly large cargo ships, might look into a ship grinder but feel it would need to be absolutely enormous to beat my current method.

A lot of piracy I do from the suit rather than a specific capture ship, i'll fly out in something with a clamp sure, but it doesnt damp the victim, instead i board and loot/disarm

I also use a grinder pit like kristakis' for shredding the ships. I like your little tug for pushing em down. Personally I use a g-field under the pit, leave the victim a tiny shred of uranium and stick an artificial mass block to the roof of the ship. If chopping something bigger than the pit then you need to cut it into managable chunks and ensure each has power of some kind for the mass block. Dont be afraid to chuck on a small reactor if its not powered, you are about to grind it back anyway.

Just the raw technical stuff of my little grinder. Auto transfer to the "mainship"cargo. I dont really like wasted parts of ships so this one (with 80 grinders each side) noms everything. Big enough for a military transport (picture) or a hauler.

Docking, turning on the grinder, turning on the motors and then ... going for a cappu ... or two.

That thing is hilarious. It's like one of those dollar-store pistol-grip flyswatters. Awesome.

How do you even fly this? Let alone have the arms stay in position when flying. I will post my ship I made in creative for testing later tonight, it is similar but on a smaller scale.

The arms of the ship can rotate just 180 degrees. If the victim is nommed, the arms will go back in their normal position just with reversing the motors.

The mainpart of the ship isnt ready yet. There are two clamps to hold the arms in position for flying. Actually its really hard to maneuver with just that little engine ;) - damn slow.

After much thought, I came up with this. Then I crashed it into a few things hence the different colored pieces. Now that I've got the knack of piloting it, it's a great platform for capturing. The booms keep the center of mass reasonable with even a monster ship inside them. I usually just grab it with one or more of the main gears on the upper section, bring it to a stop, detach and then reposition for transport, attaching both the main gear and the forward boom gear. Sometimes I will weld on a couple blocks if necessary to keep the load squared. It's not fast but it's very stable considering. I bring it home for dismantling if it's too large to all fit in the large cargo on the attached grinder ship, or just cut it up on sight if it's small enough to carry in the trunk. [IMG]

    Yea, that flysquisher looks crazy!

As for me, I have modded the cargo ships to fight back. So, I had to make a medium-sized ship. Utilized mostly light armour, with the heavy one protecting crucial components and generally the whole frontal projection. The ship featured 2 big engines (for around 600 000 kg mass), a rocket launcher protected with rotor-based heavy armour door to take out turrets or reactors, a ram for delicate approach and a retractable landing gear (was a pain in the ass to use, but at least it was protected from gunfire).

I can't show it since I have reworked it into a flying gravity cannon, capable of ripping the whole parts of the target ship off. You may see it, the first 1/3 part was a raider ship before (only with a lower amount of forward/backward thrusters) http://imgur.com/MzuEgfN

I'm guessing some designs are going to need updating with cargo ships shooting back now.

I am so happy now, that I was building my capture ship as a raiding frigate from the very beginning. Catch em, paralyse em, drag em to the nest and suck their disassembled guts, he-he!

P.S. Considering the increased damage and missile turrets, I will probably need to make front armour 1 more layer thicker though.

It was. Now its nearly useless cuz of the turrets :/ Need another strategy.

Alright now that turrets are active on the Cargo ships, Let see some designs.

I know that the decoy block will come in handy now. If you watch the beginning of the update video, the ship that is in First person mode, uses 3 decoy blocks to block a missile or two.

    Anyone got any more tactics?

I think it might be easier to go back to the old ways. Except that the best plan I have is bringing a fighter over to take out the turrets on the ships, or the conveyer lines to them, and then dock and disarm the traps in ye olde fashione.

But I'm not sure. Certainly my older design needs updating to be able to handle things, as the one layer of light armor wouldn't last long under that kind of fire at those low speeds. In some brief testing, I did find that there is a minimum speed threshold for the shooting, and it is over .1m/s So that's a thing.

I rebuild the startership. Light armor swapped to heavy armor, some additional parts and a gravestone (inspired by Deathrace) at the front of the ship.

I can drop the gravestone to distract the turrets. Works fine. Turrets are aiming for the armor, ignoring me.

This was a bit like my idea. But more of them. I read some where on the forums that one guy used a Connector to eject ore out of the front to provide more things to hit.

    Edit: Here it is: http://forums.keenswh.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1282789892&postcount=1

I have built a ship designed to carry 2 decoy pods. My plan is to make a decoy inside a ball of armor. Once I get close enough I'll drop them, then go in to disable the guns. I haven't tried it yet, I may well end up dying.
My first attempt was a ship that could shoot the turrets out, but that failed, it was too hard to hit them.

    Ship - Lance Corvette

    Class: Light Attack Corvette
    Weight - 840,000
Armaments - 2x Self defense Gatling guns, 1x Automated anti ship missile launcher, 1x dumb rocket pod]
Features - Self sustaining gravity field, medium cargo capacity, fast forward acceleration, maneuverable, 2x heavy front armour (with ramp "slat" armour ontop), Cargo / maintenance hold for internal repairs, all weapons linked with tubes to the central cargo boxes & two large rear clamps for towing.
Deployment - Primarily designed for small scale attack / hit and run missions. Its speed, mobility and firepower make it a suitable ship for attack lightly armed vessels but it lacks thick heavy armour resulting in an unbalanced fight when pitched against military vessels.

Well, if you don't mind the workshop links:...

I've been using the Mk3 version of my Chaser design:
    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=258374010
to chase down, disable, and drag the cargo ships back to my base.

And I've been using a slightly simplified version of this:
    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=258969870
to grind them down into useable parts.

There's no workshop link yet for the grinder ship I'm currently using, but I do have a picture:
    http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/3299196622685690906/7BE54DC0E3A978F7BCC8EB0B52F49364F7F79A6A/

    How am I doing?
Well, the military ships are giving me trouble, but anything that doesn't have rocket turrets on it... well, those I can stop, shut down and bring in no problem. And the grinder works a treat. The pad with the clamps on is big enough to take a respawn ship in one go, and it takes about 2 minutes to grind one down completely.

Hi! I want to show you the last design I am now using to board cargo ships. I call it "Marauder" light cruiser.

It has 7 rocket launchers, a gravity cannon, gravity engine, decoy pods, landing pads for tugging captured ships and landing pad for a small loader ship (used to load shells inside the cannon), two moving hatches covering the cannon and rockets, a small ram to take out turrets carefully. Two cockpits, differentiated armour and high survivability. Works like a charm! Though, it is a bit too long, may be.
Built 99,9% in Survival mode. 0,1% is one of the rotors, since I can put it with lower amount of wasted space in Creative (a bug of Survival, I suppose).

    Warning! A lot of pics!

Last time, I captured a military freighter. it has gone even too good. One good shot from 1.2 km and the vehicle is helpless. Some after-action pics.

love these ideas! I may have to try a few of the grinder designs, apparently my idea for a pit of grinders seems so last century! I'll post my designs in a few days!
