Haha ... it`s the Monolith :) ... someone posted that Thing before ... maybe you can attach some Hydrogen thrusters to it and send it into space

We need to do some crash tests! If it takes that long to grind, it must be nearly indestructible. Can you say "Weaponize"?

I attempted to decode the "language" on the side as if it was an english substitution cipher (it could be something else):

    Spooky.

There were three land-based Monoliths, one on Earth, one on Luna, and one on Europa. Apparently one of them (probabaly Luna's) had been on Mars earlier but left when the planetary conditions took a turn for the lifeless.

They posess some form of energy shields which is what renders them nearly impervious. Energy shields confirmed. :)

Anyone else hear about how hard the monolith is to destroy and think .... "Lets weaponize it!".
Maybe some "claw" type attachment with landing gears to hold it in place while digging under it to free it from the surface. Add a bunch of thrusters, and player made weapon that wont get destroyed until the thrusters give out.

If you can even move it.

Cut it into little chunks and use them as armor tipped bullets/missiles. Can they be destroyed with a warhead? It might be the only thing left after you destroy a ship with it.

Decided to do some testing today after my chemistry lab. Here is what I found so far:

I am sure this is the tip of the iceberg, but this is where I stop for the time being.
Now if you will excuse me, my brain is opting to shut off and run around aimlessly hunt sabiroids...

    Actually, the quote was:
    Just sayin'.

Anyhow, yeah. Monolith on Mars. I wonder if one could dig up the model, and release a version that can be built onto the workshop?

Just for the sake of curiosity (and maybe future feature hints), the model files for that thing you found are in \SpaceEngineers\Content\Models\Environment\Props while textures are at \SpaceEngineers\Content\Textures\Models\Environment\Props. So... Environment props. Ideas? :p

What are the GPS coordinates for the Monolith? I wonder if the equivalent coordinates on the other planets would reveal anything else?

There is data in cubeblocks.sbc - it is a large ship block with very high grinding/welding time and no other special properties (hence why it is easy to destroy with weapons).

Good job Keen. You have dropped in an easter egg which:
    A) Is a great joke
    B) Is a terrific nerdy sci-fi reference
    C) Has the ability to offer some lore into the Space Engineers universe which you could utilize later if you so chose to do so.

    My compliments...

    PS...

Landing platforms. These things would probably make good landing platforms given their tolerances for impacts and their relative light weight compared to heavy armor. You could also use them to armor your station against meteor impacts -- just my $0.02

Nice bit of testing. I'm curious to find out more about them and see what else keen has in store for us. I love this game and the developers are geniuses.

    It's morse code!
EDIT: or is it? maybe my image to sound convertor is not that good :D well whatever it is it looks like oscillogram
EDIT2: now i'm not really sure if it really means something or not. Maybe it is just part of texture that looks like soundwave :D it is just too obvious on the texture (in alpha channel). I noticed it because the monolith is mostly clean, but light reflections are strange on top and bottom of it. I know this community is awesome so if it really means something people will figure it out :) Maybe it's just me seeing easter eggs everywhere now :D
