So I was attempting (In prep for the planetary update) to make a tilt-wing aircraft. But I can't get the large thruster there to fire in response to the WASD keys- is there any way to make this play happily?

You'd need to use merge blocks. Thrusters attached through rotors don't function according to WASD.

or you can turn the rotor in the direction you want to fly

Booo. Merge blocks don't let me rotate for VTOL.

As I understand it, the idea is to have them as a "safety lock" for either position. You turn them off, turn on the rotors, and then turn them back on once they're properly aligned.

But on a small ship they're 3x3 wide, they'd end up taking up the entire hull, wouldn't they? :(

Its a bulky solution. I mostly see it used on dropships.

Mind, that IS what I'm making (more or less.) AND it would solve the problem of the rotor's bit making the ship swing oddly. It's just a lot clunkier than I was hoping to be. :woot:

Argh. Tested it. The merge blocks now rip the rotor apart, as rotors have no bend. So much for that idea.

Few months ago I attempted to re-design my Copperhead transport (Final Fantasy movie) from fixed engines to tilt-able gondolas.

    Here how original looks like:

Main goal was to tilt main engines so I can adjust them to flight/landing actions. Sadly faced the same problem you have. It ended with fixed pre-determined positions: flight and landing separately.

But then yet another problem appeared. Rotors are too weak and wobbly for my idea. Hull to gondola joint made with rotor isn't the most reliable and durable one. I tried to workaround it with merge blocks but they are far too large. Idea was to have 2 sets of merge blocks so it could hold gondola in it's flight/landing position. Going from flight to landing required disengaging flight lock, move gondola down and then reconnect/reinforce with 2nd merge block.

The only real way for engines on rotors respond to WSAD is to hotkey increase/decrease upper/lower rotor limit on your toolbar. Instead of WSAD you could use 1 2 3 4. That would at least give you somewhat what you aim for.

As a side note. I like Copperhead design very much and I will rebuild it as I wish it to be (lost my original save)

well, you can use a wheeled ssupension and some clever sensor arrangment to fire up those thrusters at any angle you want them :D
since programming STILL does not allows us to manage it, it has to be done this pathetic way..

I successfully made a VTOL without merge blocks:

Thruster override flies it, was surprised when I noticed dampeners work throught rotors in weird ways.

    It actually works pretty well.

What are the settings on the Pistons and rotor? My piston keeps snapping after merge. Also my merge blocks turn off but do not come apart either. Frustrating! I hope they can make a VTOL block that does not work on principle of rotor and stays connected to the grid and simply updates position of thruster after the animation.

A bit outside of the current subect, but seeing that large ship engine on a small ship hull kind of made me wishes we would someday just go and make a single unified grid which would include blocks of both small and large ship sizes kept at their respective size.

So you could do something like make a ship or rocket using mostly small block built/wrapped all around a single large-ship block engine without the need for pistons, rotors or other trickeries

Still there are bugs on this combination piston-rotor merge but is doable but Keen have to fix it and than we can make VTOL eazy. And for the setings are rotor on slow speed and piston on min. dist. 2,3m.
