    Summary
Hello, Engineers! This week’s update is another minor release that contains crash fixes and smaller improvements as the team continues work towards the next major release. Good news - we managed to improve AMD compatibility and fix flickering shadows issues.
Just in case you missed the stream earlier this week, we discussed more about the performance optimizations currently being worked on. Here’s an example of one of the worlds being used as a benchmark to analyze sim speed.

It’s a simple scenario with 16 red ships and 16 simulated players which are all moving at a speed of 20m/s. This is running on a system with an i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and an GTX 750TI.
Without the optimizations, this scenario would run with a sim speed of around .5 and would take 33ms to update rigid bodies. After the optimizations were made, the exact same scenario was running at close to .9 sim speed and was only taking 8ms to update rigid bodies. This is just one of many performance optimizations being worked on.
We’re also working to make the 3rd person camera function better with creations that have subs-grids so there’s less snapping to 1st person when rotating the camera around the main grid.

Lastly, next Monday we will be streaming as usual at 7PM CEST on the Keen Community Network over on Twitch. During this stream, we will be speaking with Marek and Olga about GoodAI as well as the General AI Challenge, and discussing how these projects have been progressing over the last couple of months.

    Fixes
    - improved AMD compatibility
    - fixed flickering shadows

    - fixed crash when pressing Games tab on server list
    - fixed crash in MP when moving items around inventory
    - fixed crashes connected to parallelization

Fixes AMD, shows video talking about intel and nvidia. I don't have AMD anything but I thought it was funny.

@Drui Can you elaborate a bit more on what optimizations were done towards AMD? Is it Ryzen related? For GPUs? If it's for GPUs, what generations may see any benefit.

Is the AMD stuff for CPUs or GPUs?
I have an AMD GPU, but Intel CPU, so the distinction matters. :p

A+ rating for communication this update; knowing what's being worked on really helps a lot. Fantastic news about the work on optimizing the game. And as someone with an AMD GPU, this is good news for me! :D

"An i5 processor".....the i5 750, which I am currently running BTW, came out in 2009. The difference between mine and something like the 7600k is pretty big....much bigger than the difference between an i5 and an i7 that are the same generation(especially for SE, which may run better on an i5). Saying you're running an i5 is like saying you're running an intel processor that is at most eight years old...how useful :p

The fact that they've doubled the sim speed on their test hardware with 16+ ships moving around, is a massive improvement that we'll all benefit from regardless of CPU. Some will see bigger gains than others but it's still going to be a pretty sizable performance boost.

I'm looking forward to whenever the improvements hit! :)

Boring! What's the SimSpeed improvements for the Tapping? Bring me a single Tapping moving at 20 m/s at 0.9 SimSpeed and i'll be impressed.

Still need to fix getting stuck on every slope when jumping, that's a quite urgent bug to fix, as it impairs general gameplay heavily

thank you for thinking of us AMD guys..

but the shadows are still flickering in X-fire mode for me.

    AMD FX-8150 @4.1Ghz
    AMD Radeon HD5970

(its kind of older hardware, sure.. but it works fine for other games.)

Anyone else look at the pic of all the red ships and immediately think "oh look, target rich environment!" or that just me....

Keen the red ship is alright but its still very low poly/complexity. If you want to analyze the game running slow id advise trying out something like my ship here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=771720381&searchtext= and I dont mean this as a self plug. Its just that I know it lags like hell, more so than anything else ive ever used, and looking at these upper extremity examples may be a way to figure out what the issues really are.

    Other examples would include:

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=728724865&searchtext=

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=605060077

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=815813862&searchtext=

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=774455636

Id really encourage you to use more demanding models in your tests. Using the red ship is like practicing for le mans by driving around a sleepy neighborhood in a honda civic.

Yup no question it's a pretty solid bump. But I still think saying i5 is incredibly vague these days though.

    Greetings

Thanks very much for the extra information you included in this patch post!! I am in Oztralia and can't watch the streams thanks to our crappy Telstra internetz in the OZ outback so a bit of extra information like this is awesome! I really wish there were summaries of the main points in the streams, usually have to spend days searching about for tidbits to see whats happening. :woot:

P.S. at least I can manage to watch the update videos to see whats arrived with the patches, though I have to walk away for a while to let YouTube pre load the video for a bit lol.

You're missing the point. It doesn't matter if it's a current gen I5 (most likely is) or one from 5 yrs back, on the same box their optimizations increased the sim speed from .5 to .9, that's progress. An I5 is a good test because you can bog it down easier and ensure the changes have some positive effect.

As for the AMD love... I was so hoping for it... coming from this:
I was hoping to be able to read text again but we get this instead:

Better luck next patch? If I had to guess it's something about shadow memory getting all clustered together as it's showing shadows from several nearby LCD's none of which is on the same grid. Shadows on LCD?? How about none and just turn it into an emissive like it should be?

PS: not a performance issue, this is on an R9-Fury with an 8 core FX-8350 and 16gb of RAM.
