With all the ship building that has been going on I'm sure all of us have at one point been inspired by some piece of science fiction such as star wars in the design of ships. I have seen countless replica ships but the influence of previously existing ships in your design can be something as simple as where you put your bridge, or what your halls look like. All across the suggestions you can see influenced ideas ranging from shield generators to aliens to warp drives. It is obvious that everyone has their own inspirations and goals for this game and the creation of thier ships. If you were to pick one object that inspires you most what would it be?

    Mine is Battlestar Galactica.
Even the civilians had cool ships.

Mine, I suppose, is a mix of everything I've seen that I liked. It's one part BSG, one part Serenity, one part Star Wars, one part Wing Commander, one part Freelancer. The list goes on.

Earth tech on Babylon 5 would be my first pick. The wise thruster placement on the Starfury, rotating ship and station sections to mimic gravity, large weapons which can cut other large ships in two... all good stuff really.

Science-fiction runners-up would probably be Homeworld, Mass Effect, and Stargate.

I am keen to see grappling hooks and tow cables in-game as discussed elsewhere, then something like the battle in Serenity starts to look highly likely.

Well, my imagination. I played lots of space games, seen lots of SF movies, read lots of SF books so I can say I know most of the iconic ships and stations. I have my favorite ones (YT-1300 / YT-2000 Otana; SSV Normandy SR-1 / SR-2; USS Defiant to name a few), but in almost every case I found something I'd change to fit my personal preferences.

Let's take Millenium Falcon for example. My ideal version would have cockpit in between the claws. YT-2000 has that - cool, dream come true. No, YT-2000 engines doesn't suit me, I like the looks that YT-1300 has. So my ideal YT series would be mix of YT-1300 and YT-2000. I even personally nicked it YT-1820.

And above I have with every vessel I encounter. So my "muse" is my imagination of perfect ship. A total mix of other + fair chunk of original design. Overall my ship must be functional and look nice (for me).

Homeworld (Taiidan and Turanic carriers and all factions' capital ships) will likely influence most of my large ship builds. My small ships seem to follow a couple themes within my own imagination.

Edit: I just realized my carrier has managed to look a lot like Kith Somtaaw's carrier. Cataclysm was my least favorite HW game, over all, and I haven't touched it in years. I'm surprised at how similar they look even though I didn't use the Somtaaw Carrier for reference.

Another Taiidan (or it is Taiidanii, like China/Chinese?) My latest Strike craft is inspired by the scout/interceptor. [IMG]

I guess for me its a smattering of both current U.S. Navy Tech mixed with Mass Effect and Farscape but this is my favorite mashing of the three so far.

Mass Effect, along with a little Halo and just a dash of Ratchet and Clank (I love the stylised art-deco look that Insomniac tends to lean towards with many of their designs).

I too pull from all over the place. Everywhere from 2001 to Firefly and BSG. I've always dug the Klingon fleet in Star Trek as well.

I've built stations inspired by the X-Wing/Tie fighter series games. I am also sometimes inspired by some sci-fi pulp covers.

What I usually don't do is make replicas of these because I like to come up with my own creations and the constraints of the SE voxel format doesn't work well to do the originals justice, IMO. (Though I have to admit I did begin to make a tie fighter when I realized the side panels would have to be too thick and it would just come out ugly)

I made a ship similar to the Pride of Higara (home world). Eve has inspired a lot too. I just have an affinity for vertical oriented ships.

Star Trek, Star Wars, obviously. Babylon 5 somewhat. Firestorm Armada (love my Relthoza). Endless Space, Masters of Orion. My own ship designs from my sci-fi setting. Freelancer. Pretty much anything I play or watch influences how I create slightly.

Sort of from all over though I have come up with some ideas of my own based on what the blocks let us do.

The majority of my builds resemble Halo and Star Wars ships but not because I am trying to replicate them but because Cylinders (HALO) and Triangular (Star Wars) ships are very effective designs. Even though in the case of the Star Wars the Star Destroyers really Do not make effective use of their shape with their weapon loadout, their primary armament is placed on the top and in a straightline so that the only way they can shoot at stuff is either in a broadside (which only lets them use half their guns) or by tiliting the nose of the ship down so that the guns can aim up (which cause problems with heading) The proper way of using a Triangular shape is to place the weapons on the sides of the ship in a step down fashion so that all of your guns can fire to the front while also retaining some broadside capabilities when being flanked. But this might be better for another topic so I am gonna stop now, and maybe make a new thread later on the power of shape

    oh and at Radma

where ever my brain takes me.

although most of my "ships" are functional parts and sub constructs for things.
