[1.184.200] [DS/MP] Massive lag and sim speed drop when welding/grinding/placing blocks

    Issue: Lag and server simulation speed of about 0.2-0.05 after about 20-40 minutes on our server, only when a player is welding, grinding or placing blocks. A restart fixes this until it starts again after half an hour.

    This happens not for all grids on the server. After some testing this issue seems to occur only when working on a few grids on the server, but not always the same ones after a restart.

    When it happens and the server is not restarted immediately, it becomes unresponsive for minutes when working on grids ("no answer from server").

    This did not happen with 1.184.102

    Reproduction:
    - Start a dedicated server in survival.
    - connect 2+ players
    - play for 20-40 minutes, place blocks, do stuff
    - lags should happen soon when grinding and welding

    Just lag in general on DS. Programming blocks causing huge hits to Server Sim Speed.

    Tossing my hat into the ring on this one. Welding or grinding a block causes temporary massive drops in sim speed (with the "No Message from Server" warning), as well as long-term performance degradation over time, the more blocks are welded and ground.

    Can confirm having a similar problem on DS with the new uptade.
    At least when creating a block from a projection.
    But the symptoms are the same, sudden drop of the sim speed <0.2.

    Was not present in the last version :/

    Ditto same issue for me starts out ok then lags so bad when welding/grinding its unplayable! How is it they update this game and seem to break things that were working just fine? I don't understand how they continue to do this... I love the game but this is so frustrating to have an update each week only to wait and see not what they have added or fixed but to see what they broke or made worse each week. Come on Keen, how about some help here!

    I made a short video about this problem as well. For me this occurred while in a 'offline' world (so no multiplayer influences at all)

    This problem started as soon as the world loaded in.
    The grid I'm working on in the video is a smallish station embedded in a smallish asteroid.
    I only showed welding in this video, but grinding does the same thing.
    I'm thinking it has something to do with loading in of different models / textures for blocks, since the game freezes shortly when the graphical appearance of a block gets changed (due to welding / grinding).

    This problem only just started in 1.184.200

    Hello,

    please send us the world at the EXACT SAME POSITION YOU ARE. So that when we load up we have to only weld those hangar doors. We tried to reproduce the issue on our worlds but with no success so we want to see if perhaps some specific component in the world is causing this problem.

    The issue happens at all three big station grids (1 earth, 1 alien, 1 in space) after a while of playing and welding and grinding.
    I tested this without mods as well, same issue.

    Been running my server for about a month now without Sim Speed drops until this latest patch...i don't know what causes it but my players are saying exactly what everyone else is stating on the thread....just letting the devs know.

    Okay, so I made a few copies of the saves right before this issue occurred as well as right after finishing welding (from the autosave system).

    I loaded up both to see if it's still happening right before I posted this reply, but now everything seems to be just fine. No lag whatsoever (I did only play for like 2 minutes on each save file, maybe it only happens when you play longer in one sitting).

    I've had it happen just grinding regular armor blocks on my DS. I first noticed it when I ground away a block, another broke off and turned into its own grid, and had a huge lag spike, followed by many other sim speed issues as I've continued welding and grinding. It seems I had some random decompression effects from just grinding away an armour block next to an inactive and unpowered air vent too, but that may be due to a mod or just something that looked like a decompression as the sim speed was going nuts. Both blocks were vanilla, though.

    Yea, the decompression effects are getting quite annoying and makes no sense what so ever. And quite loud as well...

    There appear to be two bugs happening in this thread:

    @auge the OP appears to have the welding/grinding lag related to particle effects - a known bug with a report thread or two elsewhere - I have this too but tend to fix it on my machine by modding out the "construction dust" effect.

    @ThijmenDF has some problem which might be related to block appearance changes, as he suggests.

    I found another way to reproduce the sim speed drop.

    Using and attempting to weld up a projection on SP causes major CPU spikes accompanied by sim speed and fps drops. After welding approx. 10-15 blocks the sim speed will progressively get worse and worse as you try to place and weld blocks. Even if not part of the projection; after moving away and turning off the projection the drops persisted even if just placing blocks anywhere.

    Sorry, but I have to disagree.
    Here we are talking about server sim speed drops issue. I don't believe the DS to be computing any kind of visual rendering (or you might have invented a new type of dedicated server).
    Moreover, how come a known (as you say) visual bug can suddenly reappear after an update? Especially when OP, Ironviper42, myself and many others (on steam discution thread) relate the issue only with the update?

    No, I'm pretty sure it is a new issue that occured with the last update. And it's not related to any graphical computation (as I repeat, it's the DS sim speed that drops first and not the client (the client's speed is then forced to be synchronized with the DS sim speed)).

    But I agree the potentiality that the bug OP, Iron and myself reported is different from the one reported by ThijmenDF.

    I'v had this issue today as well. My world is still fairly new, there are not many large grids. I was building my small'ish space station when the welding/block placing lag suddenly started.

    SE DS CPU usage was around 40-50% when sim speed dropped. Normally it's a lot less.

    if i could offer something to look into....

    oxygen generators.....when they're connected to conveyor and you grind a block that is connected to this conveyor system.
    sometimes it does the depressurization thing......but like...ALOT! like that one depressurization event times 50 or something
    scares the hell out of me at times but that might be something to look into since it only happens when you're grinding a block away. :(

    This is a good start. However, I was experiencing this when welding heavy armor blocks, large reactors, large cargo containers, or connectors. This was on a large station grid.

    Bug appeared again today. But it took quite a while to appear.
    The bug appeared arround 19h10. I've put my DS the log file below.

    I see in the log file the following output line:

    Don't know if it's linked but this "Clusters reordered" only started to appear in the log file after the begining of the bug.

    Allright, I got some more time to play in this world again. Continued working on the hangar and noticed the "lag when welding" to become worse the more blocks are welded, almost up to the same stage as in the video I put up for it earlier
    > I also noticed everything running a LOT faster after I welded a large amount of blocks after one another, suggesting that sim speed got increased to keep up with the lag from welding.
    Furthermore, but probably not surprising, this bug also occurs when in a ship with a welder attached.

    Experiencing the same drop in Sim and Server speed. Only when trying to place or weld blocks. Flying around doesn't cause any issues.

    This definitely needs a hotfix, this issue is an absolute gamebreaker since you practically cannot build anymore. Building something takes like 10 times longer now due to the sim lag and the high latency it causes

    Yup! Same thing happening here, it's taking the game between 3 and 10 seconds to sort its sim speed out after welding a single block - while bouncing me around in the meantime :p I don't think it's a specific component causing it, since it's happening to me with Light Armour blocks, Heavy Armour blocks and Interior Wall blocks.

    Getting the same on desktop - big lag about 20 mins from starting game when grinding. Saving game and reloading fixes for further 20 mins (i.e. not exiting SE fully).
