I would like to put this suggestion through to you (the Developers) to include a slanted (45 degree angle) airtight hangar door. As of now, the current hangar doors work and are perfect for most applications, however, many designs (of mine and others) would gain far more visual appeal if we had the ability to have such airlocks and hangar entrances to contour with the exterior of our ships.

Now this may be something you have planned for later, but just in case it was overlooked, I would like such a thing to be added to the game.

Below are a few of the issues at hand with one of my designs.
As can be seen, it is not possible to seal a slanted hangar bay. In fact, there is no means (other than using rotors) to have such an entryway.

The example above works (as in it seals the airlock), however, there is a rather large area of space that is being wasted due to the fact that the hangar doors have to sit further in to seal themselves. This extra space is important as it can mean the difference between being able to fit certain small ship designs into the airlock or not. I'm of the opinion that the nature of this door can or should be able to allow this to be possible (sloped windows, and such are potential examples/models to work with). I imagine only minor alterations of the actual hangar door model need be implement as well as collision models.

    Thank you for your time.

Would they be rounded or blockish? because i think we should have the option for both.

The initial idea is for this to remain simple. Therefore I would suggest that they first implement this as a straight block using the same base model with but the end contact points being altered. However, because the block has to register as a sealed system and make contact, in order for this to work as a 45 degree angled block with similar opening capacity (or 2 block space), it would have to take up a measured 1x2x3 block space. It would not be able to remain a single 1x1x3 block as it would end up becoming a 22.5 degree angle (or the same as that of a 1x2 slanted window block).

However, the benefit of this is that at the lower end of the 45 degree angle, you would effectively have 1 block worth of space before contacting the doors collision box. you'd have about .5 of a block worth of space at the center and the top would be flush (or close to it.) Even better, you could do near anything with the angel as you need only align it correctly. You could have it flushed up with the exterior, or by simply changing its position around, have it recessed by about a meter or so.

Just FYI, a block like this would take up a huge amount of space, since it works more like an interior door than a piston.

Looking at the slanted door from its side, it would take up all that space.
    Code:
    [\]......
    ...[\]...
    ......[\]

That is, it would be a problem until the release of compound blocks, which we all hope is coming :D

that is something I always wanted and even attempted to build with rails,, wheels and joints, for the door to open like a garage door. It had to be so massive that it was ugly, and kept getting stuck :( The fact that every working build had to be so massive defeated the purpose to reduce how much vertical space the door was using when opening :woot:.

It is certainly something to look forward to. :woot:

I'm sort of a little worried about how the in-game model would look or function. Lord Devious has the point that this would take up some additional space, but if the model is done correctly it wouldn't really matter much.

I imagine a slanted exterior block with a similar design as that of the current airtight door. But the question becomes, what would the top connect to and what would the bottom connect to. I imagine it can be done, I'm just a little curious as to how they would make it fit with the amount of space required and for it to be reversible as well... hmm... two version possibly with the bottom possessing 3 blocks built into it perhaps.

(armor block- armor block- slant 45 degree left door) and then another (armor block- armor block-slant 45 degree right door)? that would work I suppose. Then you just add the left and right walls to seal it. huh.. might work on a sketch of what it could look like.

While it would take up a lot of space, it doesn't have to take up more space than a Large Thruster on a Large Ship; which, in my opinion, would be the perfect amount of space for this idea. One block wide, of course.

i was messing around with my ships and thought it would be nice to have hanger doors that match the angle of the triangle shaped blocks. mostly so that it has a smooth surface on the hull and not smooth then a random indention because hanger doors only work with the square blocks.

I'd love to have this, bump. Also a blast door for the 2x1x1 slopes would be fantastic too.

This mod has a 45ยบ 3x3 paintable hangar door, although I'm not sure if it's airtight. They can be stacked.

Well then while we are asking for serious stuff that Keen should spend precious time developing what about we ask for hangar doors of 7 different sizes along with several variations like 90, 45 degree and the 2x1 sloped angle. While we are at it we should also ask for a trap door design of the hangar doors because I need that for my precious creation. We could also ask for Concrete, plastic, brick and of course who could forget gold blocks. Now we are at the point where the developers would start hating us and give up on the project.

You even state this problem yourself. Someone suggest a door you suggest a different variation. Suddenly we have about 1000 blocks in the block and everyone hates it and wants more..

Why should keen waste their time on a sliding door? We already have a regular door that works perfectly fine? Why add more NPC's like cyber hounds when we already have sabiroids? Why the hell do the devs even have to get out of bed in the morning if mods are clearly the solution to all the games problems?

There is quite a clear difference between adding content that expands the game and adding content that is just purely cosmetic. Honestly I even agree that the NPC variety we have right now is definitely enough for the game as it is. The only thing they probably should add is the ability for AI to have ranged attacks (and probably make an NPC for that).

The thing here is I believe in adding and suggesting content that EXPANDS the game and leaving all aesthetics to modders. If we go around asking for variations of stuff constantly we will end up with way to many blocks in the end.

Wow... I had actually forgotten about this one.

Sioxernic, I'm well aware of your answer for everything for the game. But when you attempt to debate or point out something, try to stick with practical arguments. You tend to use the "Extreme's" argument far too often.

Now unless you have difficulty counting to 3 I don't think a 90 degree, a 45 degree, or a 1x2 airlock door would add that many blocks to the list. And even if you happen to find issue with that, the User interface for selecting blocks still needs to be updated and more intuitive.

Sioxernic, why dont you save everyone some time and just add "Don't add any more blocks and features to SE, make mods instead!" to your signature?
As far as I've seen that is the ONLY thing you've written since you came on the forum, that and arguing those points.

And I believe no game should ever rely on mods, but needs to be able to stand on its own. Why should I be forced to use third-party stuff created by amateurs? Highly talented amateurs and with all respect and admiration I can give, but amateurs none the less. Even many of the best looking mods are highly inefficient as game models. Because while many of these people are great modellers, I'd wager few of them are experienced enough for game modelling, which is an art in and of itself. Not to mention that any mod can be pulled or broken at any time, leaving my builds ruined.

Sure, limit the scope, I don't disagree with that. But there is a golden middle road somewhere.

If you actually take a look you will notice I am usually for new features and against block variations. The difference between those two things is new features expand the game while block variations (Concrete blocks, 45 degree hangars, etc) are variations of blocks already in the game now reallly adding any mew gameplay or anything like that.

Then you wouldn't be opposed to concrete "voxel-hands" in survival fueled by a gravel-turned-cement resource (possibly combined with metal grids) being added as a ship tool? Because that is a new FEATURE that yes, exists as a mod, but SHOULD be a vanilla option. That or just hosing out the gravel as rocks on asteroids.

As for the 45 degree doors, a nice and good vanilla door for this would be good, hopefully they'd actually take the time to make a proper fix to the block volume usage/conflicts while at it. Meanwhile, we can hope for more work-around mods that adds this as well.

No I wouldn't be opposed to concrete "Voxel-Hands" as that would be implementing a new gameplay feature. I wouldn't be opposed to radars or aerodynamics even though those are mods considering they would add new gameplay elements to mod upon. (And probably be more efficient since they would be integrated into the main code)

But I would be opposed to a 45 degree airtight hangar door. They are not needed and adds nothing to gameplay beyond aesthetics. In my mind they clearly fall under Mod Territory. If you want to challenge yourself to make a pretty ship, go vanilla. If you want to build a very pretty ship go mods.

the bit about them being pulled or broken is what makes me wary of some otherwise great mods. i'd rather not spend hours using them and then the next day find out all the pieces are now missing.

Even so when the game is released the chance of a mod breaking or getting pulled is going to be negligible besides people have a tendency to reupload and fix mods which are either broken or removed.

if it's a re-upload, does it have the same ids and such? or do you have to place the missing pieces again?
