OH NO GEORGE! You bring tears to my eyes. Please tell me it's not too late to enter my video that I just uploaded last night, November 30th.

I spent over a month making it :'( hahaha, don't mind though as it's my fault ;). I also don't know whether it's appropriate in style/storytelling and to be fair there aren't any other videos...

Well anyway, I will enjoy reading all the entries :). Good luck all!

Were these only ones selected by the devs, or are these all of them? If it's all the ones submitted, mine should be here. I submitted it ~ a month ago.

I voted for your entry, I just left open all the stories I liked. Couldn't decided until I noticed yours was the only one where the main character wasn't dead at the end.
Not sure what some of the author planned to do if people wanted a follow up story.

Aha fair enough :woot: Tbh it's just a scientific/realism gripe, it doesn't detract from the story any (Which honestly is outstanding, I'm amazed you got something so well written out of such little conflict)

Thank you! I do like happy endings. I also wrote this from the (rather hopeful) perspective that it might one day be a story mission. I don't think anyone really likes dying after a good mission.

Dang it. I really regret not having heard of this contest before. Writing is what I do.

    Next time, surely.

I can already tell you that that answer is no, they are not. I've only received 30 additional hits on my story since this thread was posted. Obviously some people are coming to vote simply because someone messaged them to vote for their story. I don't begrudge that, I posted the story because I could, and I wanted to tie in my story with another I was writing. Considering that the story I was writing, started before SE even came out, was about a space station that was to serve as a way-station for belt mining operations, it seemed only natural to link the two together. I only had to change a couple of dates to make it fit with SE.

Well it's kinda sad. I know no one who plays SE, so just a very few votes on me. Well my purpose wasn't wining, just wanted to try myself. I like writing and the one here is just a part of a story I've created some time ago. Biggest chalenge for me was translating so I gess it could be reason mine isn't so popular.

lol ur living in a fantasy world bro

ive been followin this contest since a little bit after it was announced. i have read all the fics and thot most of them were cool. im not good at writing so i dont have one. but its obv when someone is cheating. no19 had 7 votes when i went to sleep at midnight and then 13 when i woke up at 5 and has since then the no has gone to 32 at 130.

imo that story is bad for a few reasons but it is mostly the structure of it all. like no quote marks around speech and that first long para should be five at least. it looks more like a rough draft instead of something complete imo.

but my beef aint the presentation its how it breaks the rules. does the game have mention of a base on mars? does the game have planets in it in general? animals on the planet? the main char goes to a school on a planet full of animals. how is that not breaking the rules? did any devs read this? and thats all from that 1st long para.

what about him on this station he makes up? he describes a dude who sleeps, drinks, and staggers around the station. how does he drink with his suit on? there is no indication of such. is sleeping in the game? last i checked no. the main dude also has a bed, coffee maker, and a bathroom. r those in the game outta nowhere? all this is on the 1st 2 pages the guy did.

its funny this story is allowed when most others followed the rules. then this guy quite obv starts cheating. shows how much stock was actually put into the rules. while the other two highest, urs hawthorn and no11, take some a couple liberties, no19 according to the rules shouldn't even b a SE fic.

this is all imo take it how u want. i wish everyone luck but it seems so far the one with the most friends and rule-breaking story will win.

You're right on all of those issues, I think. I don't now, however, how Keen would go about fixing them. :(
Now, I hate to point fingers about cheating, but it does seem like No.19 had been adjusting itself up to match the top entries, and then exploded to make things decisive.

I'm in agreement with Mikali with everything they say. The sheer amount of things "author 19" puts into his piece that are not in the game is just not cool. Everybody had to follow the same set of very easy to understand guidelines and that includes author 19.

Further, that jump in votes is very suspicious itself. If Mikali's time table is correct, then seriously? 20+ votes in less than 12 hours? Talk about padding the numbers.

As for what can be done about it, that's quite simple. It violated many of the set guidelines and seems to be stuffing their proverbial shirt so that they can win by a landslide. Response? Expulsion. Disqualification. Elimination. Use whatever term you may like.

However, something tells me that this problem will go completely ignored even if we were to send direct emails to Keen's employees.

*siiiiigh* ... easy come, easy go. So much for this.

As with the level design contest and HQ screenshots, it would have been so much better if the devs were the ones to judge these, afterall it's their universe. Now it's just arms race for who has more friends or fake accounts. It's a shame as I have really enjoyed reading trough every single one so far, but won't bother voting myself as this whole competition is such a joke. Like awarding people for doing bad things.

    May the best looser win.

Yes, the quantity of objectionable content in 19 is truly inappropriate. Also, 11 was yours? I liked it.

    Seconded.

WTF I just read #19; first of all it sucks ass and second it broke the rules... why is this allowed??? It is pretty obvious there is fake voting going on.

Wholeheartedly agree. Hopefully the devs change their minds about how all this goes should we continue to discuss how much we dislike this particular system. Just like Reddit it's far too easy to take advantage of it.

I know, right? Part of why I don't think even Keen read through most if any of the stories.

@Hawthorn - Yeah, mine is story 11. Thank you kindly. :3 I like yours, too. Just like the ending of mine, it beautifully sets itself up for a sequel. But hey, mine mentions a Captain Reynolds who is captain of a ship called Firefly. Automatically cooler! *hairflip* :woot: Just kidding.

No. 16 here. I agree something is going on with story 19. Almost thirty votes over 2 days, that's half the total votes. Unfortunately this will only be noticed by the general public. May the best man win. (Ergo, not story 19)

I'll come out and say mine's #15. Honestly, I think this would have been better had there been no prize attached to it, if we were being serious and wanting the best story. I haven't even gotten through half of these yet, I suppose I'll find time to finish reading them all by the end of the week. (Yes, that does mean that I'm not going to be a homer and vote for my own just because it's mine, if there's a better one out there, I'll vote for it) This contest, and the Level Design Contest, I don't think were thought through very well. Only a 2 week window to view and vote, who has the time for that around Christmas and Chanukah? The Screen Shot contest is at least a look and vote, can do that in about 20 minutes depending on your ISP speed.

Anyways, If anyone is interested, I can provide links to the background of my story.

Great works all around! I wish I took a moment to write something. Some of these stories were very creative. However, I have to say that I don't give credit where the use of proper English grammar and paragraphs are lacking. Which is why I can't possibly see how number 19 is winning. The story is one giant paragraph with mixed use of quotations and is difficult to read in places. The growth rate comparative to other entries seems too forged. But I digress.

My vote was with #1. I thought Ishmael captured all of the attributes I love about Space Engineers: people, ships, construction, mining and hidden bases. Even if you don't win, this was a great piece of fiction and well written.
