I'm looking directly at a block, such as an armored block. I click the P-key. Select the color. I press and hold the MMB. Nothing happens. I click the OK button and the color dialog disappears. What else do I have to do??

I'm having several such issues since the release from Early Access. Do I need to reinstall??

You select the color you want, leave the color dialog, point a block on the block you want to color as if you want to place it on that block, and press MMB. Works for me.

Yep, I'm doing that. So many broken functions. I'll try re-installing the game.

Make sure you own the block you're painting, too. I believe they added ownership control on it since people were running around griefing others by repainting...

(the color dialog doesn't have to be open to paint)

And check also if the commands layout is still on MMB for coloring.

I reinstalled the game. MMB is still the button to push. No joy.

this seems to be the problem for my survival dedicated server with my friends. we can't paint each others blocks (I can because i'm an admin). we are all in the same faction. Is there a way to change this so anyone can paint anyone's blocks? I think some people said to share ownership but you can't find armor blocks in the control panel...
    -thanks

do you have mods installed in that world? Does it also not work on a non-modded world?

I think I may have found the solution. I was unable to paint a built block. When I select color BEFORE building, I got the right color. Lesson learned??

You should be able to paint / repaint blocks already built.

Also, I'm in Survival mode, not Creative. Would that have an effect? I cannot repaint blocks.

Also, I verified the game files, even after unistalling and reinstalling the game.

Survival mode should not matter for painting, that is the one thing that is "free" (Cost no resource) :)

Just to make it absolutely clear - you are using a block from the quickslot-bar, something like an armour block - right at the block that you want to paint and then you press MMB, right?

ok so I'm onto something on my dedicated server.
so I installed "midspace admin helper" and got the other players to use the /claim command looking at the ship and they can paint!!!!
but unfortunately it's only one person at a time -_-
not to big if a deal to switch between players but man! why should 4 people have so much troubles to paint a simple ship together, it's a fundamental part of the game.
there was a /share command but that didn't work.
if anyone knows a way to share the /claim command for multiple players then please tell me!

As an experiment, I uninstalled the game again. Removed the files structure left behind and my saved games. Resinstalled.

    I still cannot color blocks.

I guess they were unable or did not want to do this on a ship basis, only a block by block basis, so with a faction shared ship, each block can only be painted by its owner/builder, which makes group building projects really awkward - the only workaround seems to be to designate a decorator and change all ownership to them after construction for the ship to be painted, which seems... poor. ... hence, Stoner - be sure you own the entire grid, if any parts were captured or have no ownership set, that will prevent painting.

@Stoner are you running all vanilla? (No mods) If you are using mods maybe, just maybe is a mod issue??

Actually I think I have seen this painting problem myself lately. Most of the time it has had to do with ownership, but it does appear that there are some issues in the latest patch with painting other blocks. I suspect it may actually be a glitch in the game and should probably go on the support site.

just to clarify only the owner of the grid can paint anything on that grid. not even admins can paint over, nor even faction members set to "leader" or "founder" rank can. can someone escalate this issue to support because I don't know how :3
my friends would love to help paint each others ship asap.

I'm also facing this same issue. Just recently got back into Space Engineers, created a world and a friend joined. I'm unable to color any blocks in said world but my friend can. I created a new creative world to mess around in, and coloring works just fine there. Seems like coloring for me is completely messed up on the existing world we play on. This is vanilla / no mods, and a fresh copy of the game.

I kinda gave up on painting blocks due to the same problem as OP describes. I can select color. When I build block it has that color. But trying to change it with MMB has no effect.

I play vanilla with no mods, single player survival. Just like the others.

this was my problem on my early days too. i realize that you have to be in build mode holding that transparent looking light armor block in your hand. then you would have to stick that holographic light armor block to your target block and press SHIFT + middle mouse button and that will change the color of the target block with the one you currently selected in your color picker ( P ).

but my issue is that i cannot re-color a single block. it will have to be at smallest a 3x3 block. i ended up having to delete the blocks one by one and reinstall them with my desired color.
given that we can use a color-copy mode by SHIFT+P targeting a single block, it saddens me that we cannot also change the color of a single built block

first of all, this is a year-old post :p

Secondly, sure you can. Press just middle mouse and it will paint a single block. Shift-middle is a larger brush. Control-middle is even larger. Shift-control does the entire thing.

Thirdly, get Midi's paintgun mod. It's superior to the vanilla painting in every conceivable way.
