I recently started playing the Escape from Mars scenario, and I wanted to attack a base in a slightly smarter way than a turret orgy, but I didn't want to do the kinda cheap mining under strat. As such, I wanted to thrown stuff at this base (air base if you wonder) without getting too close.

I first attempted making a simple bomber module for my minimalistic flyer. Quite simply an aiming camera, plus a bunch of landing gears to wich I attached a few armed warheads and decoys, and dropped them one after the other. the turrets (2 gatlings, 1 rocket) didn't let me hit a single shot. after a bunch of other tries, I made a more armored bomb, then a kinetic torpedo... I didn't even scratch the armor.

After this, I went back to base and tried a guided RC missile. once again, not even close. I even tried putting decoys far off-center and spinning like a beyblade who forgot about the way of gravity, in hope of confusing the turrets; didn't really work better.

    Any suggestions?

drop rocks. no really, at max speed they're deadly projectiles. and i dont have to mention stone is basically free on planets.

I'm going to start building inverted gravity generators on my bases to prevent grid droppings from wrecking sh|t.

Which would be great if it were not that gravity generators don't work in planetary gravity. Would work on a moon though, but then do the rocks get enough speed to be as ridiculosly destuctive?

I thought they did work in planetary gravity... I know for a fact they work in low G conditions, up say 20 - 30 km off the planet surface. I'm also fairly certain they work right above ground as I use gravity generators to walk about the ship when it's moving (for a long time walking on a moving grid in gravity was a death sentence without a grav generator sticking you to the grid.)

I'll test this tonight to verify.

Well, I will try to drop rocks on the base like a caveman. Any advices on practical design of missiles anyway?

I tried designing a couple cruise missiles... Autopilot is wonky. But in general I think a missile design should be as minimalist as possible to prevent undo misfiring. I would consider the use first, surface to surface, surface to space, space to surface. I had a design that was promising but I gave up testing it when the autopilot went all tardo. I do need to look into it again as a well fired missile is devastating.

The rock drop is incredibly effective. I wish it weren't, but it is. The rock drop was my main weapon in escape from mars.

As to missiles kinetic damage is the way to go. If you're using a remote control block and camera a single engine with blast doors attached to it would probably be effective. That's expensive though as atmo engines cost a lot of nickle which is very valuable in EFM.

Iron is the only resource that's really expendable, especially since you can just steel mill an unlimited amount. Using iron you could make a bomber which uses a connector and camera to drop iron ingots. Those are also incredibly effective.

nothing like going back to your roots of being unevolved monkeys throwing stones. ^^
but with a bit of engineering grit it can be evolved into throw stones MK II.
missiles and bullets can be expensive and annoying to create....why not just attempt to nuke it from orbit with plain ol gravity propelled kinetic energy!

If you have resources to spare you can try to make a stacks of 20 k explosives and literally nuke the place

200 meter blast radius is no joke.

Surely the whole point of attacking the base is to take something away from it? If you totally obliterate it there will be no prize at the end.

There will be victory and satisfaction.
At its best there will also be salt collected from your enemys tears

Build a small fighter. Attach small cargo containers to a couple "wings" and slap ejectors on the back of them. Put stone in the cargo containers and on a bombing run, turn the ejectors on. At max speed, the falling stones will hit with so much force it will make warheads look like little firecrackers. You'll blow holes in the base big enough to fly your fighter through them.

If you want to drop obscenely powerful kinetic projectiles...load up a container with absolutely as much rock/iron/expendable as possible, fit a merge block or use landing gear to attach it to an aircraft...and throw/drop it at your target.

the extra mass will cause a terrifyingly powerful impact, made nastier by the container breaking and a load of -huge- boulders appearing in its place to continue causing damage.

Much easier than trying to make it rain tiny rocks too.

    Good ol gravity/momentum bomb.
we've evolved from monkeys throwing rocks to space engineers loading up large boxes....with rocks then use a massive metal spaceship to throw it for us and letting the momentum.
    .
missiles like gattling turrets only really shine with ether direct aiming or just building loads of them to level an area.

Best bomb is to throw cargo container full of stone, the effect is like a frag grenade launcher, boom...boroboroborobobom...brom...boom. And you do not need to thrown from space, just 1 remote, 4 gyro, 1 container.
