...I have no idea where to start. I've wandered through the various threads about modding, but am still absolutely lost about how to begin the process. Can someone offer one or more suggestions that will walk me through the modding process for an object (e.g., say I want to build a new type of block such as a small-grid antenna scaled up to a large-grid size; maybe that's too complicated)?

(I don't know if this helps at all, but I am adept with AutoCAD, especially with regard to 3D modeling because I use it all the time for work.)

Harag's tutorials and guides here in the forums are all still very relevant, as are Shaostoul's tutorial videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL60QLL7opZPZ8uMCHIzIIETA38sMxygon
AutoCAD experience will certainly help with the early process of the 3d modelling, but you'll need to get some texturing and UV unwrapping experience too if you want fully custom blocks,
not to mention you'll want to get comfortable with Blender or Maya to make the process as smooth as possible, to keep the beginner errors at a minimum!
I'd highly recommend following along with the guides step by step and just importing a veeeery basic model before you do something too complicated.

Good luck, and most importantly have fun! :)
