    Hi guys.

I often local host a server in Space Engineers survival. I'm not sure why but it seems to be popular when online and I've made a fair few friends in the process to.

The problem is, I simply can not maintain a 24/7 server at present. I play the game on a hex core machine due to the immense CPU demand of the game but sadly, I do need this machine for other tasks and games.

Now I don't do rentals. I don't care how reasonable company A is or what deals company B offers I will never rent a server for a game. I have the internet capacity so I'd much rather set up a local 24/7 dedicated unit so what I need now is advise on an ideal CPU for the task. I don't want to go overboard and buy a 6th generation i7 when I'm sure I don't need one. I suppose what I'm asking is what is the lowest CPU suited for the task, be it AMD or Intel and then I'll go a couple of tier up to give some head room.

Thanks guys and please, do forgive me if this is a common line of questioning, I did try a search but forum searches are usually pretty fiddly to find what you want and I actually got 0 results from trying.

I'm actually running a server in a VMware VM, the underlying CPU is an Intel Xeon X5660, 2.80GHz, and I've set up two vCPUs in the VM, although the game runs in a single thread AFAIK, and I've given the VM 4GB RAM, mostly because of Windows, my server process is currently using ~1GB RAM.
This is running the game quite stable, although at most we've only been 5 people online, and we were mostly hanging around the base, with some people occasionally going of mining, always together.

Hey, thanks for the reply. That sounds quite complicated to run a virtual machine. I'd rather just build a PC up to the job and click the run dedicated button. AM I better looking for higher clock speed quad cores or is more cores at lower speeds a better option such as the mentioned Xenon or maybe a cheaper, FX 6300?

Do you think maybe a decent i5 is a good option?

Well, I alread have a VMware rig with three hosts and network storage, so one extra VM wasn't complicated :p
Considering the game only uses one thread, again AFAIK, a CPU with more cores is "wasted" unless you are also running other stuff on the server, so aim for the higher clock in this case.

So it does indeed use only one thread, good to have that confirmed.

-ADDON; Considering AMD chips are usually cheaper (by quite a long way) I may seek out a high clock speed but dated AMD chip for the job.

I mean, take the old FX 4350 Quad Core. It has a default clock speed of 4.3ghz which I can easily push to 4.5 overclocked. You'd think that would be enough raw CPU power if you can do it with a Xenon X5660

Going to bump this. I'm keen to know if this is enough power or not or if I need to think bigger (FX 4350)

SEDS use only 1 core. Server performance is enough for 6-8 people.
You can increase performance up to 15-18 players if you use SESE.

I assume SEDS is Space Engineers Dedicated Server but what is SESE?

If it's just for you and a couple friends, ANY somewhat recent era PC should be up to the task.
    As an example...
I have an older Intel Core 2 Do with 4GB RAM running Ubuntu. It runs 10 players just fine. I've also run it on a 1st gen i7 930 with 12GB RAM, effortless. Server had about 40 mods, fwiw.
If you're building up a system for it, I'd definately aim for horsepower and RAM. You get what you pay for, and with the game updating so often, and the pricepoints so low, there's no reason not to :) But like I say.. For a couple buddies and yourself.. Just about anything with at least 2GB (with mods?) will be more than ya need.. Your bigger enemy might be upload speed.. SE loves bandwidth (all MP servers do, lol)..

    What about upload/download speed?

Looking to host a server for me and a few friends, have the machine specs for it, my download speed is 100mb, upload speed is 10mb.

    is that sufficient?

If that is a genuine question then the answer is simply "hell yes"

If however your just being a boasting ass hole at your net speed then screw you :p

i would say a fx6300 would be more than enough go for it pared with say 8gb of ddr3 like $50 and a basic but decent gpu maybe last gen as a server does not overly need a gpu for se anyway have a friend running one on a mid range intel rig and it works great when my internet is working good
also bunny's machine is utilizing his multi threads as he says he isnt even running on 50% when like 15 or more are on it%% so im sure a ppc like that will work ill get some more info for you when i can mate
    --- Automerge ---
o also your net speeds are more than enough so dont worry about that my friend hosts of a really fast adsl 2+ connection i can't remember the download he has but upload is like 800 kb/s but trust me that for us aussies is a hell fast connection you have

A Quad Core or Dual Core CPU (SE can not use all cores) + 8gb Ram minimum + more than 10mb conection is enough for planets and some friends, but for the moment, host a DS is a complete nightmare, MP is broken and keen gives no sign of improves. So to anyone who is thinking in become a dedicated server host, give up, it's not worth the headache and anger that you will pass, and not even think about renting a ds, you are throwing your money in the trash.
I say this because i follow SE from the very beginning, i have more than 1100hrs and have a server (which is offline thanks to the "new" MP) since the DS was released.

I used a Pentium G820 with 8gb DRR3 1060 Ecc on my server, only one core and 3.5gb was used. As the current MP is unplayable, i gave up my server now only sp occasionally.

Hi Sir, YES I would strongly recommend that if you are looking to purchase hardware dedicated to hosting SEDS you aim for a processor with as high a single core performance as possible (Use CPU Mark - single core performance as the comparison metric mentioned above). Scaling out across multiple cores is minimal compared scaling up with regards to how the server software functions - at least that was the case a few months ago. An i5 would be an excellent choice, over-clocking it should also be of significant benefit to a dedicated server.
