Space Engineers uses .xwm files to store sound information (directory: [Steam installation folder]\SteamApps\common\SpaceEngineers\Content\Audio), these files can be converted to and from .WAV (Wavesound) audio tracks using this utility, which was originally intended for use with Skyrim.

This allows modders to include their own music and sound effects in the game. It also allows you to obtain the soundtrack for Space Engineers in a format that can be listened to outside the game.

Instructions are included in the download.

I'd like to note that the converter works both ways - for all I know no official soundtrack has been released yet, so if you want to listen to the music in the meantime you can use the program.

Be sure not to publish your copies, though, as this is almost certainly of questionable legality.

I'm not familar with Skyrim. My friend send me an XWM file but i can't play it on my iPhone, iPad or other players.

Then i turn to Google and find another professional way to convert XWM files to MP3, WAV. After converting it to MP3, WAV, i can play it easily.

    It really helps me.

I know a powerful XWM Converter called iDealshare VideoGo which can extract and convert XWM music from the.bsa in Skyrim to WAV, MP3, AAC, WMA, FLAC, AU, OGG, AC3, AIFF, RA etc. It also applies to convert to XWM from various audio formats.

Hm, so it could be possible to make Audio Mods? Anyone tested to replace an Audio Effect?

I used the skyrim one to convert the refinery sound to a .wav, lowered the volume, then converted it back to .xwm and it worked just fine. Tried a few other sounds from the game, some convert OK, others just produce a blank 0 second wav. Also finding the right bitrate and stuff to convert back to seemed completley random, sometimes it worked, other times I got an error.

Pretty much more trouble than it was worth. Why cant games just use wav, txt, jpg, and mpeg?

Because it would be too simple. ;)

Hm, could it be that the Skyrim one is too old for SE xwm Files? Even such File Formats are in Development and get new Features or Changes in Format etc.

In fact, all in-game sounds (except music) are not stored in XWMA format but in WAV files with .xwm extension. So to change the e.g. refinery sound just rename the corresponding file to .wav, edit it then rename it back to .xwm.

First you are going to need xWMAEncode.exe, a part of the DirectX SDK.

Second you can use this batch file to decode the music.

Then, with both of those files in the same folder as the music you wish to convert to .wav run it and you've got some SE Music! You can change the batch file to reverse the process to convert .wav into .xwm for custom music. You can further compress the .wav with a program of your choosing that does this, such as Foobar2000, found here.

I have not found any issues with this process so far, but you will need both the tools and the batch file from that thread in order to get it to work. I've been playing the SE Soundtrack now in rotation with some other epic space game music scores.

FYI: For those that are curious, this is the same process I used for Skyrim.

Are we able to use custom sounds for our mods, or has Keen still have that ability locked for right now?

    Anyone?

    sigh :(

These tools doesn't seems to work. They give me file of mere 77 kb out of 2mb sound, and it refuse to play in game. WhatdoIdo?

We desperately need a sound modder to put the Bladerunner soundtrack into this game. :D To go with the fixed spotlights.

    Reviving this thread.
With the addition of sound blocks, this has gained a lot of significance.
Imperial march block to put on your ships anyone? Certainly something to keep me busy during holiday season.

There is a much easier way for testing sounds in space engineers that are in the XWM format. XWM and WAV are very close, so close in fact that you can simply rename your XWM file to WAV and it will work just fine.
If you take the “SoundBlock_Alert1_l.xwm” sound file and rename it to “SoundBlock_Alert1_l.wav”, you can edit and play it in audacity. I made it 50% slower because it sounds cooler. Then save it and rename it back to “SoundBlock_Alert1_l.xwm” . Go into space engineers and play the sound. It works fine.
However, I wouldn't use this method if you are planning on adding the sound to the work shop, i would use it simply to test the sound out beforehand so you know how it feels in game.
