I have about 20 hours in the game but they've all been single player. I am a bit shy with the multiplayer because I do not want to break community rules, so I was wondering if there are any that I should be aware of.

    For example--
Do I built anywhere, or do I find an empty asteroid?
Can I claim cargo ships or will they spam the world with unneeded blocks?
Do I need to delete everything I made (to free up server memory) if I decide I dont want to play on the server anymore?

    Thank you

Well it depends on what server you join there are many different servers each with their own etiquette and rules. For example on our server we make sure you have a beacon on your ship so what it does not get deleted on server clean up.

This is actually a great question, and while I feel like every server will have their own rules this would actually be a good time (and place) for us to hash out a set of community rules that will (usually) be true for most servers.

I mean it really does depend on the type of server TBH, servers can vary so much but for public Vanilla servers yes I can imagine that they will all follow general rules. Most of the rules are common sense. The server Administrators should be the ones making sure that the server runs well and maintains a good quality.

    Agreeing with MrKoronas.

We went whitelist for two reasons :

    1. Pub servers require too much RL work to manage with no real controls to do so
    2. Easy to remediate any issues that come up, since controlled access to the server is via Steam Group, and I can kick on the spot if a griefer manages to spoof their way in

Generally, don't go blowing folks stuff up unless it's a PvP server and don't go "borrowing" stuff without clearing it with the owner.

We've had 0 drama by just keeping it simple, and I find most of our players are on several hours per day, and generally help each other.

One thing that would be nice for players to do is to announce in chat when you finally load.

I see people connect, try to say hi to them and they of course don't respond because they are loading. I wait a bit, say hi again, no response, and again no response.
They build some stuff and leave and don't even bother saying hi.

Say hi (or whatever greeting you prefer) when you get in, its the nice thing to do.

I used to run a small minecraft server with friends and of course ..friends of friends.
Obviously it is easy to have a server with people you know but it can get boring, so we allowed them to invite co-workers etc. This added a semi-public detail to it without the full throng greif-bait that public servers inevitably provide, people came in respectfully and yet didn't know eachother personally enough to care about being a little competitive with them over territory.
    This produced a few things:
-Healthy trade, people where all known for having lots of some things and we had made a public train system that others could tap into with their own tracks at designated stations I had made with "ready to connect" track sections so that they could connect to the system without messing with it in an un-ideal way.
-Healthy PvP, players expanded into places others had hoped to build in the future etc, walls started going up and a little bit of TNT jihad took place here and there.
Now this is where I would like to stress a rule I had made that of course was only able to be functional under an honour system but I believe could be implemented in some way or another: Players could only attack the property of players that are online.

This meant to give players the comfort of logging out, prevented players from tastelessly trashing stuff when the victim was unable to defend himself, and allowed a much more friendly fun PvP experience because if you noticed you where being attacked you could retaliate (which led to some creative escalation) and it was done in a more competitively friendly manner just in the way that on a personal level seems to work better.
*consider you steal all the candy from your office neighbors candy jar while he is away and never say. That would be pretty tactless. But if you reach into the jar with a silly grin and he slaps your hand away its probably a more friendly scenario (unless you are actually just a creep and should be fired ahah)
With that said, if there where server rules implemented (if they aren't already, only been in a few days on SE so have not learned all the features) where objects a player has created become invincible when he is offline. I think that would be a relatively safe solution. It obviously can ALSO be exploited, but if a person is just being plain not fun then that's where bans come in. Also, moderators could still have rights to remove anything especially if a player is absent for an amount of time.
Again, there is always a way to exploit a game mechanic. It comes down to the player and the community. Full blown public is a nightmare in anything to do with the internet. From games to news comment sections, it cannot work as people are to disassociated with whoever they are messing with to ever care. These people are usually bored at this point and so don't respect what they are destroying and cant comprehend the hurt from some levels of greif they produce (again, from games like SE and minecraft, to making hurtful racial comments in forums and feed comments. Public is a scary place)
With the faction system implemented and rules like this, I think we could see some good comfortable competition.
I like my no-pvp games, but then it kills the purpose in making a bad-ass fortress ship when the asteroids are no longer a viable threat. In minecraft I had built what my brother refered to as "that suspicious looking tower". Of course he was right because I had built three tnt cannons in it. Once in awhile while he was online I would fire a single volley at his village, as I had made it strong enough to get some good range. Couple villagers die, he jokes about how he is "going to tell the UN about these atrocities". Builds a wall, month later shoots back. Casual tnt attacks ensued over the years, and it actually drove us to build cooler functional defensive stuff.

uugh that was long winded for a short point. sorry .

I don't think there's something like a official etiquette yet, rules are quite different on each server as far as i cal tell.
The main rule i enforce on the servers i'm running is: Be fair.

A lot of people think they're really smart if they grind other players bases while they're offline, use the lag to slip past turrets or assaulting them again and again with spawn ships. In the end, they just waste their own time and the time of other people.
