World "..." failed to save. This can be caused by running out of memory or problems when writing files. Working on this world any longer may result in loss of progress. You can check log file to find out more about what caused this error.

I keep running into this issue and even after trawling through the internet, I cannot find a fix.
My computer memory seems to be fine, but the log comes up with:

Failed to write voxel file 'C:\Users\S******\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves\76561198007302574\New Save\.new\EarthLike-784751276d120000-0-2-0-4-5-2-1-3-7-11-22-3-9-15-1-0-1-2-4-7-11-15-19-20-23-0-0-3-0-5-9-1-4-7-0-0-0-5-12-0-3-3-0-0-0-3-0-2-3-1-5-1-0-0-2-0-3-8-2-1-5-8-0-0-1-6-0-6-0.vx2'
2016-12-20 12:18:06.010 - Thread: 13 -> Exception occured: System.IO.PathTooLongException: The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.

Is someone able to help with this, please?

    Hey Rikerwota,

I am also having this issue.... I'm hopeing I can make a new save in the root of C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves\ etc... it seems like everytime I wanted a new save instead of creating a new branch; it nested inside of previous save, which causes really long paths.

I have no idea if there's any way to change the save location or name size, but I'm reluctant to mess around with anything in case I end up making the game completely unplayable. As it is, I'm having reload randomly and not engage any random ships, events or meteors as any of these triggers won't allow me to save my progress.

yer i run into this alot have to keep an eye on the file name and reduce it every now and then

Change the.vx2 file name causing an issue to a shorter one by removening all the -1-0-2-15 charc. Make a note of the new file name. Open up SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbs file and do a serch for the origanl file name. You should find it between the tags <StorageName> and change the name to the one you have just change the file name too. (dont include the file extension .vx2)

What worked for me was finding the most recent save that contained the "Backup" folder as well as the necessary .vx2 files, (as well as the following: Sandbox.sbc, SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbs, and thumb.jpg) and moved that up to the root of my save directory.

    Which was : C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves\76561197960425473

as you can see the original path was way too long...
    C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves\76561197960425473\Lone Survivor 2016-12-23 19-02\Backup\Lone Survivor 2016-12-25 - Pre-Battle\Backup\Lone Survivor 2016-12-25 Midnight\Backup\Lone Survivor 2016-12-26

    it is now simply:
    C:\Users\Dan\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves\76561197960425473\Dan\

Hope this works for you guys!

Thanks for the input, I'm going to try these out.

What are you using to open the .sbs file?

    Cheers

I've tried Wordpad and Notepad but the file opens up as unintelligible characters - is it supposed to do that?

You may need to simply just look at another backup file if that's the case... I noticed some of mine truly weren't saving and would only contain the 'thumb.jpg' while others seemed to have all the correct files. I didn't try to open the .sbs file at all though, in fact I didn't really try to open any of them other than the thumb.jpg.

My backups seem to be missing the earth-like planet file but the other files are there, so I don't know what's up with that. So frustrating....

I have the same issue.. Fix sandbox and file names resolve this.. But, KeenSWH.. You must do something with a saving.
Periodically, a few characters added to the file names. And in the end it rests on the limitations of the file system.

So, is there anything I can do about this if my sandbox sbs isn't opening properly for me to fix the file name?

The last few patches haven't fixed anything. I'm really hobbled with my game-play right now. Maybe I'll play something else until it's fixed.

Hiya folks here is how you fix. youll find that this needs to be done every now and then. Just follw the steps below.

    1. open your saves folder. change the file names of all your planets and remove all the -1-0 crap so it looks like the below example
    change from
    EarthLike-784751276d120000-0-2-0-4-5-2-1-3-7-11-22-3-9-15-1-0-1-2-4-7-11-15-19-20-23-0-0-3-0-5-9-1-4-7-0-0-0-5-12-0-3-3-0-0-0-3-0-2-3-1-5-1-0-0-2-0-3-8-2-1-5-8-0-0-1-6-0-6-0.vx2
    to this
    EarthLike-784751276d120000.vx2

2.take note of the new file names
now you have to alter the world save to point to the new file names

    3. using notepad or preferably notepad++ open the file SANDBOX_0_0_0_.sbs

    4. do a find/search using the term <StorageName>earthlike
using the above example the search should take you to the line
    <StorageName>earthlike-784751276d120000-0-2-0-4-5-2-1-3-7-11-22-3-9-15-1-0-1-2-4-7-11-15-19-20-23-0-0-3-0-5-9-1-4-7-0-0-0-5-12-0-3-3-0-0-0-3-0-2-3-1-5-1-0-0-2-0-3-8-2-1-5-8-0-0-1-6-0-6-0</StorageName>

    5. as with the file name from before delete all the -0-2 stuff so it matches the file name you edited earlier so it looks like the below example
    <StorageName>earthlike-784751276d120000</StorageName>

    6. now do the same for the rest of planets one by one
below are the search terms for the standard solar system.
    <StorageName>europa
    <StorageName>alien
    <StorageName>moon
    <StorageName>titan
    <StorageName>earthlike
    <StorageName>mars

    7. hit save and start your server

This helped a lot and seemed to have fixed the issue, so thanks very much, Muttly! :)

Yep i also reported it for fixing since it seems people have been playing for so long that the voxel name is going over the Windows standard allowed characters for naming a file.

Thank you everyone and Thanks Mutty for the work around.

I have the issue where my .sbc file is unreadable. I went back several archived saves but no luck. My save was started shortly after planets were released, so it falls into the category that category I23I7 is referring to. I think I am going to wait until the survival revamp/re-balance update drops and start a new game. In my corrupt save, I have only been to the Earth-like, Earth-like moon and Mars-like planets/moons since planets were introduced. Obviously I am playing the game wrong. My question is how much time should I spend on each planet and moon to see them all? I have been referred to as a "turtling-b*tch" in other games, so this behavior is not isolated to SE. I like to take my time what can I say :) Thanks for any replies!

I was going to, but the particular world had a large number files. But my understanding from the user Duckroll, is that his utility accomplishes the same steps you outlined above.

I'm just saying, a utility or something from KSH would be great since this will likely be an issue throughout Beta.

I will suggest Long Path Tool program that will solve this issue with simplicity.

im curious a to why these extra characters are being added to the planet's voxel filename, it will only do this if programmed to do so, as it involves changing the filename entry for the reference for the file, deleting the old file, and saving the new file with the extra characters, definitely seems like its been programmed to do this.
